Visual Culture of Multiculturalism
A research project by Lava, Amsterdam
Tutor: Evert Ypma
Since the sixteenth century the Netherlands has been known for its tolerance towards religions and cultures other than the native ones. Today more than thirty percent of the inhabitants of the big cities are of non-western origin, and this influence can be seen in all culture layers. Changes in the social composition have caused political turmoil and intense debates on Dutch identity and tolerance towards other cultures. The time will tell if Dutch society is as tolerant as they like to believe on first hand. This design research shows how communication and design practice is dealing with its diverse context. It explores present strategies for diversified forms of communication. The investigation aims to give graphic designers and communication professionals insight and ideas how to seriously reinvent communication in a multicultural social reality.
