In its essence design(ing) is a public affair. Understanding design as politics is key to the current and future civic spatial, material and psychological cohabitation dialogue. This puts any design decision and activity into a social-political frame. In the light of large global issues and related challenges, design questions and the act of designing should be perceived as social-political questions. Consequently, designing progressively has to become a practice with a political influencing agenda, integrated part within the social debate.

The systems of design and politics are multiple linked, but their touch points and relations are unstable and unclear. This leads to confusion and negation of the political dimension of design within and outside design practice. Political implications reach much further then the system of politics and the act of ‘designing’ implies more than the system of design production alone.
